As we come to Christmas we all hear the story of Christ birth. Often singing, "Round yon Virgin Mother and Child, holy infant …" Today, I paused to contemplate this "Virgin Mother and her holy infant" . What kind of Mother and Virgin must she have been. That the she would conceive the "Son of God" that would bring redemption into the world and save mankind from their sins.
Surely, this "Woman" as Christ called her, was more than any ordinary Woman. She being a virgin was espoused to Joseph, whom we hear or think little about during this season accept that he was with her as the looked for room at the inn's and when she gave birth.
There are all kinds of religious arguments about whether went on to have other children or whether she remained a virgin. But, one thing they don't argue about is whether she was holy and whether she was most holy among woman and full of faith. At one scene in the gospels, there appears on the surface to be a "put down" by Christ. In Luke 11: The story is told, "27And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. 28But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. " . Mary was first to hear the word in the gospels by an angel and she was first to "keep it" . Christ extols her for her faith above the other women she is "blessed" . Truly, it was her faith made her proclaim to the Angel, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done according to thy will."
In today's world how precious is it to even know any woman who so desires to live a pure virgin life, living both in modesty and in faith. And a woman such as this, to be so pure that she is chosen to be the Mother of Him who is perfect.. If Christ is to "live in us" , maybe we have an example of how woman should live that remains forever. Mary, whom brought forth Christ from living in her womb. What a contrast to a walk in the mall!
